little help?

I am in the process of writing a chapter for text book on Buddhism in the modern world. The chapter that I’ve been charged with is on Buddhism, media, and popular culture. And I need your help.

The chapter is seriously lacking good images. As something of a shock to me, people have been reluctant to return my emails asking for permission to use pictures I’ve found on the web. And since this is a bona fide book being published by a brick and mortar publishing house, permission really matters.

Here’s where you come in. I’d love a picture of your dharma tattoo. Now, the chapter isn’t about tattoos specifically, but they do come up, in a discussion about modern Buddhists using the medium as a means of expressing their particular Buddhist identities (insert long-winded academic jargon here). And it makes some sense to me to have a picture to go along with that discussion.

The book is a textbook. So it’s the sort of book your little brother’s going to be assigned when he goes off to college and takes an Intro to Buddhism course. And that means that the chapter in question is definitely not a long-winded rant against the evils the capitalism or the commodification or (mis)representation of Buddhism in the mass media. My feet are firmly on the ground in this one, well off my soap box. But it’s a book, nonetheless, and I’m fairly excited (dare I say honored) to have been given the chance to contribute something to it. And wouldn’t it be cool to see your own dharma tattoo in print?

So, if you’re interested, send me an email (buddhaworld at gee mail dot c o m) and I’ll give you more details about what I’m looking for, technical specs for the image, blah blah blah. Please send me an email first before sending me an attachment!

Bonus points if your tattoo is of someone famous. And this has to be done quick-like. The chapter is due to the editor in the next couple of weeks.

  1. My somewhat Buddhist mother left to me a gold necklace with the Chinese “Happiness” on it. I got a tattoo on my lower back with “Happiness” surrounded by stylized Chinese clouds…
