I sometimes don’t understand why my fellow citizens often act against their own self-interest. Then I read this article in the most recent New Yorker. The following bit explains a lot.
The lotus of enlightenment will not take root on the high plateaus of abstraction, nor in the rarefied atmosphere of the cloistered retreats. It grows in the swamp of everyday living, filled with crying babies, unpaid debts, noisy neighbors, petty rivalries, and unreasonable bosses.
